How did Theka Coffee Franchise start?
The entrepreneurship journey is full of ups and downs and similar was the case with Theka Coffee and its founder Mr. Bhupinder Madaan, Bhupinder was always interested in doing business and had the mind of an entrepreneur. The Ahmedabad boy used to sell pamphlets for shopkeepers and businessmen to earn a few hundred bucks daily.
Bhupinder had the foundation for a knack in the food and beverage business when he notice that there were many momo stalls in Delhi but not enough in his own hometown, Ahmedabad. That is when he decided to open his momo stall when he was just 15 years old.
However, when he was running two businesses at a time earning around INR 3000 to INR 4000 per day he decided not to continue his studies anymore. He even concluded by saying that he was just wasting his time studying. Later on, he started working as a freelancer for an IT company and had also worked with an app development company and while working he realized that he was a good salesperson.
Within a couple of years when 2017 arrived Bhupinder decided to quit whatever he was doing at that point in time and spent time researching the food and beverage industry. The idea of selling coffee came into his mind when he visited a bar in Delhi in a beer bottle. Like most millennials he too was attracted by the new idea but like most middle-class families he was unable to afford premium coffee on a regular basis.
It was in Sep 2017 when Mr. Bhupinder started his Theka business by selling coffee on the streets. The shop roasted, brewed, and served three variants of coffee. They were Palangtod (the strong and dark roasted coffee), the Next Level (medium-roasted coffee), and Coffee Ki Jawani (the lightly roasted coffee). These were the three basic coffee types that the stall was selling but they had nine more flavors.
Within next couple of years Bhupinder had researched and adopted the franchise model and opened 14 more stalls not only in Ahmedabad but in Pune, Jaipur, Rajkot, Bhavnagar, Bhuj, Baroda, and Anand. He was making a business of INR 3 lacs per month with these many outlets.
The company faced huge losses when it faced the pandemic situation just like most other businesses. Bhupinder had to pay around INR 1.25 lacs per month as rent for the spaces they took in shopping malls. He had to even sell out his car during that point of time. It was the lowest point of him and his business as his partner and co-founder had decided to quit the business when the startup was in the middle of a huge debt.
Theka Coffee In Shark Tank
Theka Coffee had the opportunity to represent itself in the famous business show Shark Tank India season 1. Bhupinder Madaan started off his pitch by explaining about the coffee-drinking experience that he had and how it was lacking creativity.
Bhupinder decided to move with some of his best-selling products on the show so that he could impress the judges. His top five products were Palangtod, Next Level, Coffee Ki Jawani, Chocolate Patola, and Berry Piya for the five angel investors of Shark Tank.
Revealing some unimaginable numbers about his company Bhupinder was also able to impress the investors by letting them try the coffee products. Judges were ‘Wowed’ by the fact that he had made a sale of INR 1 crore 52 lacs worth sales in his first year. It was Namita Thapar despite being impressed revealed that Theka Coffee’s shelf life was creating an issue in her mind.
All other investors pointed out some problems with Theka Coffee’s business model which was why all ‘impressed’ judges did not show any interest in investing in Bhupinder’s business. Bhupinder asked for INR 50 lacs in exchange for 10% equity.
