Ashish Vidyarthi was born on 19th June 1965 in Delhi to a Malayali father and a Bengali mother. His mother, Reba Vidyarthi was a Kathak guru while his father Govind Vidyarthi is an expert in cataloging and archiving vanishing Performing Arts of India for the Sangeet Natak Akademi. Ashish attended the National School of Drama until 1990 and associated himself with another theater group, Act One, run by N. K. Sharma.
It was in the year 1992 when Vidyarthi had moved to Bombay (now called Mumbai). During his early career in the industry, he got the role of V. P. Menon in his very first film, Sardar. The movie is based on the life of Sardar Vallabhai Patel.
